8x10 Polaroid Portrait 7/6/23 @ The Silver Grizzly
4:00 p.m., @ The Silver Grizzly, Longview, TX (100 W. Tyler St.) in conjunction with the Longview Art Walk! We will be taking scheduled Polaroid 8x10 portraits with our large format view camera and processing them ON THE SPOT. Even if you’re not scheduled, you are free to observe the session and the results. We will also have some darkroom things to play with and other goodies!
This is an opportunity to own a unique one-of-a-kind portrait made on this hand-assembled and very rare Polaroid 8 inch x 10 inch film. This is definitely ideal for single and double portraits (take note, couples!), but larger arrangements are possible if we discuss them. This event benefits Piney Woods Darkroom, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that is bringing back the analog darkroom to the East Texas region. (Check the rest of this website for more info!)
Photos will be against a simple backdrop with studio lighting and shot using a fully analog 8x10 field camera. As such, a bright flash and some stillness is required (in case children or pets might be part of the equation). This film is very much an experimental and analog marvel, and as such subjects should not expect “perfect” images. There could be light leaks, processing streaks and other signs of a fully analog process. In addition to the initial photographic process, the photos must be manually processed and it takes about 10 minutes to see if the image turns out. Beyond that, an additional 10-20 minutes of curing and cleaning are recommended, which we will do on location. At the end, you will have your 8x10 Polaroid image, instructions on how to take care of it and what to expect from it as it ages (they’re kind of living objects!), and you will also be provided with a high resolution scan of the image that can be sent to you digitally.
Participants will be required to show up 20 minutes before their scheduled times, and should expect the process to take upwards of an hour to complete. Arrangements to mail or deliver the final prints to you can be made as well. Please send all questions to pineywoodsdarkroom@gmail.com and include “Polaroid Portrait July 6” in the subject line.
